Five years of cutting wood into something worth hanging
WallWoodies makes laser cut wooden wall art — mandalas, wall clocks, mirrors and layered panels. We started five years ago with one question that has not changed since: why does so much wall decor look like it came off the same production line?
Our answer was to build depth into the work. Instead of printing a pattern onto a flat board, we cut each layer of it separately and stack them. A finished piece stands up to four centimetres off the wall, so it throws its own shadows — and looks different at nine in the morning than it does under a lamp at night. It is the kind of detail a photograph struggles to carry, and the reason people tend to notice our work in person before they notice it online.
We work in small batches rather than long production runs. Every piece in a batch is cut, sanded, coloured and checked by the same hands, which is why the collection grows slowly — and why a colourway sometimes sells out before we can cut the next run of it.
How a piece is made
From a drawing to a boxed piece, this is every stage a panel goes through.
The design
Every pattern starts as a drawing. Layer by layer, we work out which shapes sit where, how deep the piece should read from the side, and where the light will fall through it once it is on a wall.
Choosing the wood
Panels are picked by hand. Anything warped, patchy or scarred goes back — a bowed sheet will never sit flush against a wall, and a flaw two layers down still shows through the finished piece.
Laser cutting
The laser follows the pattern to a fraction of a millimetre, and cuts each layer separately. That precision is what lets fine, repeating detail come out clean instead of ragged, hundreds of cuts into the same panel.
Sanding and finishing
Every cut edge is sanded by hand, then sealed and coloured. This is the slowest part of the whole process and the part that decides how the piece will look — and it cannot be rushed or automated.
Layering
The layers are aligned and fixed one on top of the next. This is where a flat pattern becomes something with real depth, casting its own shadows as the light in the room changes through the day.
Checked and packed
Each piece is inspected against the design, corner-protected and boxed to survive the journey. We ship worldwide with DHL, so a piece may travel a long way before it reaches a wall.
Materials and quality
What a WallWoodies piece is actually made of, and what to expect when it arrives.
We work in engineered wood panels chosen for how flat they stay and how cleanly they take a cut. Solid timber moves with the seasons and would pull a layered piece out of true within a year; a stable panel holds its shape, which matters when six layers have to keep lining up.
Every cut edge is sanded, sealed and then coloured, so the finish sits on the surface rather than soaking into raw grain. Kept indoors and away from damp, a piece will look the way it looked on day one for years. A dry dust with a soft cloth is all the care it needs — no polish, and nothing wet.
